Holistic Beekeeping Workshop

Join us for a holistic beekeeping workshop led by world-renowned biodynamic beekeeper, author, and educator Gunther Hauk

When: Memorial Day Weekend; May 23 and 24, 2008

Long before Colony Collapse Disorder, it was clear to a few beekeepers that our modern methods, developed in the last century, would lead to an increasingly weakened insect, susceptible to a host of viruses, bacteria and parasites. The present crisis is a wake-up call and an opportunity to reevaluate what we are doing

Gunther Hauk has more than 30 years experience and study with sustainable honeybee keeping. He is the author of "Toward Saving The Honeybee" (Biodynamic Association 2002), co-founder of the Pfeiffer Center in New York and co-founder of Spikenard Farm, a biodynamic research farm and apiary in Carrollton, Illinois (www.spikenardfarm.org).

At Spikenard, Hauk's apiary is established to use queens raised using naturally-built honeycomb with minimal foundation, no manipulation of the drone population, selective breeding for resistance and without using sugar water or corn syrup.

Friday Night Lecture 7-8:30pm: The worldwide honeybee crisis calls changes in both agriculture and in beekeeping methods. Find out why honeybees are one of the most important guarantors for nature's vibrancy and health, as well as for guaranteeing our food production. To let honeybees thrive and continue their important work in our ecosystems, more people need to become aware of how they can contribute to our health and well-being. Come learn more about these wonderful creatures.

Saturday Workshop 9am-5pm: Hauk brings years of experience of honeybee-focused sustainable practices to an all-day workshop at Foxhollow Farm Center. Participants will learn Hauk's views on the form and substance of the hive, the importance of wax creation; how to work without foundations; honey vs. corn syrup, and more than the obvious about the role of drones. The day includes a discussion of the causes and treatments of varroa and foulbrood and ways of strengthening bee colonies. Hauk and participants will go into the field and work with the hives at Foxhollow Farm.

We will be serving a healthy lunch that features Foxhollow Farm's Grass Fed Beef and vegetables, and raw honey.
